So here’s a first piece created with the new performance software. I was playing around with different sound sources today – flugel, bowed flugel, extra contact mics, and then I added one of these …

What the heck are they called?

As you can see, I dampened the beaters with tissue paper and a bit of insulating tape, so that the percussive sound was duller and softer. Unfortunately, the contact mic picks up more of the sound from the beaters than the sound of the metal flexing. I guess it would be better to use an air mic to capture those sounds.

But with a regular mic you have the problem of needing to get the mic close to get the woo-ey sound loud enough, without wacking it with the beaters. This is actually quite a difficult instrument to sample well.

Anyway – the sounds that were recorded sounded good when played back very slowly, so I recorded about 10 minutes of it, and that’s the piece at the top of the post.

Steve Lawson is coming over with his bass looping set up on Thursday, and we’re going to see what we can come up with combining his sounds with my flugel and software. Depending on how well it goes, I’ll post some of the results afterwards.
